Dear Friend:
In response to the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and in conjunction with the Jan/Feb 2023 group exhibition, ROE 2.0, Woman Made Gallery is asking for your voice by sharing your abortion story. This is an on-going project and there is no entry due date. We'll exhibit the stories as they come in, and we feature them on WMG's website.
We know that there are dozens of reasons why abortions are necessary and it is never a decision taken lightly.
“It was the right decision for me and for the children I already gave birth to.” “I was not ready to be a mother.” “I got my life back.” “It allowed me to complete my education.” “I was able to leave my bad relationship.” “It secured my future.” “It saved my life.” “It was medically and mentally necessary.” “I did not want to be pregnant.”
Whatever the reasons, the most outrageous part of all of this, is that half of the population has been told that they no longer have rights over their own body and that they are now 2nd class citizens.
When I had my abortion, I could not be more unprepared. I was using contraception. yet I accidentally became pregnant. I had no job and I had just been admitted to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago to receive my Master’s degree which made a tremendous difference in my life and my career, receiving the credentials necessary to teach.
There are a thousand stories. I had pretty much forgotten mine, pushed it aside. When it was over, I moved on, taught college Art, exhibited my work, and promoted other Women artists.
Even if you have not had an abortion, you know someone who has. You may have driven them to the appointment. You may remember the feelings of that day and many years afterward.
We are soliciting those personal stories now not to exceed more than 500 words. You may sign your name or stay anonymous. With your permission, your story together with others is shared on WMG’s Website.
You have a choice to sign your name, or to be anonymous and your identity will be omitted. There is no entry fee to submit your story. By clicking the checkbox in this application, you accept and agree to the Acknowledgment and Grant of Permission. If you do not agree to the Acknowledgment and Grant of Permission, you should not submit your experience to Woman Made for the Online Project: My Abortion: My Choice.

"As girls, teens and then women, we hopefully have experienced at least one significant female girlfriend if not several over the years. These could be or have been with: a family member: sister, mother, cousin; classmates; neighbors, roommates; or colleague at work. There are obvious generational differences for women over time as cinema, television, the internet and social media each gives us access to more relevant stories about ourselves. The recurrent themes, irrespective of the era in most of our individual narratives are: love, loyalty, confidant, protector, co-conspirator and of course, drama.
Sharing life’s adventures, the good, bad and ugly were made more tolerable and survivable with a “bestie” with whom to share them. The “drama” sometimes ensues if or when the narratives of life intervene. Complicating some friendships: secrets, jealousy, betrayal are also recurrent themes in our beloved stories about girlfriends. It makes no difference if or when one’s sexual preferences or gender curiosity is added to the mix. The following article is a helpful read as a look at history:"

This is an Open Call for an exhibition about connecting to oneself, to others and to one’s surroundings. The exhibition will comprise visual material, tactile and sound explorations, dance, poetry, moving image, and more, through the prism of how we establish and maintain our connections on multiple levels.
Societies and cultures have been transformed over the last decade or so, through the global access to and use of new and emerging technologies and smart textiles. Our methods for communicating and connecting with one another is accelerating, with so many more ways to connect across the planet in real time.
At the same time, particularly during the height of the pandemic when everything came to a jolting halt, we discovered how to “be in touch” and “maintain contact” in new ways. Isolation-induced longing engendered remarkably innovative ways to communicate. In a world with so much urgency, how do people in crisis get in touch, taking action or form protest? Who is in contact with whom and what are their ways for contact and communication?
What are the unknown forces that move us, and what or with whom do we maintain contact? Do immediacy and speeding up everything help or hurt us? Do we need to slow down to find a deep connection with sensation? What about the importance of touch to foster deeper connection? What will be the next interface for human connectivity?
Artists are pivotal social catalysts who filter, express and help reveal new pathways for verbal and non-verbal communication. This exhibition aims to showcase artistic explorations into connectivity via the realms of fashion, design, craft, artificial intelligence and social consciousness. We seek work that reflects both social justice and imagination.
Exhibition Description:
The aim of the exhibition is to convey how contact and connectivity can be expressed through an array of various mediums and artforms. We seek artwork that focuses on connectivity, exploring how we come in contact and maintain connections. There is no hierarchy among the areas of craft, design, technology, sound, performance or the spoken word, nor among the five senses. How do we unite and stand together as one? We hope to present explorations from diverse fields investigating inclusive ways of contact.
The exhibit will present different intensities and qualities, filters, viewfinders and interfaces within a variety of practices investigating ways of contact that spark a chain reaction, an echo or a call and response.
The exhibition will be held from July 13 to August 17, 2024 at Woman Made Gallery, 1332 S. Halsted St., Chicago, IL 60607. Entry fee allows submission of up to three works.
First Entry Due Date: May 23, 2024, 11:59 PM CST (entry fee: $30) | Final Entry Due Date (fee increases to $35): May 20, 2024, 11:59 PM
About the Juror: Anke Loh is a designer, artist, and educator who works at the intersection of fashion, art, and technology. With a focus on textile development and wearable tech, her collaborative practice explores the potential ways of building community through craft and making. In the process of creating installations and site-specific interventions, Loh will invite scientists, designers, artists, and community members to collaborate on innovative projects such as touch sensitive embroidered textiles that trigger pre-recorded soundscapes. Her practice also explores the inherent meaning and symbolism imbedded into everyday materials such as wire, which has been used to build fences as well as serve a conduit for communication across borders.
Loh’s multi-disciplinary approach to art and design has attracted international media attention and recognition in addition to awards, such as the Laureate at the Festival International des Arts et de la Mode in Hyères, France. Her work has been featured at New York’s Fashion Week, Paris’ Centre Pompidou, Japan’s Osaka Collection Show, and Mode Expo Antwerp, Belgium. https://re-fream.eu/pioneers/embroidered-touch/

Woman Made Gallery (WMG) is seeking entries for Invisibility: Existing on the Periphery, a virtual group exhibition open to women and non-binary artists. Entries are curated by Anne-Marie Kovacs. Artists may submit up to three works plus an artist statement related to the exhibition theme. ALL accepted works with statements will be viewable online.
EXHIBITION DESCRIPTION: The theme, "Invisibility: Existing on the Periphery", seeks to explore the experience of invisibility, a condition often imposed by societal norms and at times, embraced as a form of self-preservation. This call for art aims to explore the subject of invisibility as a state of being and as a social condition that affects various groups and individuals who are systematically overlooked - the homeless, migrants, the disabled, the elderly, certain racial and worker groups.
This societal oversight acts as a dual-edged sword: for some, it is a disempowering force, stripping individuals of their own sense of relevance and dignity. For others, it becomes a strategic cloak of safety, a necessary guise under which to navigate a world that objectifies or threatens their existence.
This exhibit encourages submissions that explore the multiple dimensions of social invisibility whether they delve into the emotional or practical consequences of the condition or reveal expressions about existing unseen, overlooked or unacknowledged in society today.
We invite artists from all backgrounds to contribute their interpretations and narratives, to bring visibility to the invisible, those existing on the periphery whether by society’s or their own dictate.
This virtual exhibition is open to artwork in all media that has not been previously exhibited at WMG.
